If you are self-employed, do you take business enquiry calls when you are on holiday?
This is often a polarising question, some will tell you, "No, you should have a complete break from work"; others will say "Yes, you don't want to lose business".
As for myself, I am more on the "Yes" side of this.
I can give an example where I took a call while I was on holiday in Yorkshire (I live in Sussex).
Although, I had someone answering calls for me, I had told them that if it was a enquiry put it through to me.
That call lasted about twenty minutes and I sold my service on the phone to the caller, so that when we got back to work the following Monday, we were starting with this new client immediately.
That call led to over four years of work! If I hadn't have taken the call, would they have waited until I got back after my holiday? Probably not.
Unless you have someone else taking your calls while you are away who knows enough about the business that they can do the "selling" for you, then I say take business enquiry calls when you're on holiday.
The only other time you can probably not worry about them is if your business is in such a position that you don't need more clients.
But when you're starting out, pick up the ringing phone!
What do you think?
